Are the days of students going to the library to check-out books, numbered?
Trillium Lakelands District School Board Library has added digital and it’s been a huge success so far.
Overdrive, the new digital library launched on March 1,2017 and  currently holds 2,700 titles with 847 registered users. More than 60 per cent of the “checkouts” have been juvenile topics geared to kindergarten to grade 5 students and 32 per cent of the checkouts are for young adult books geared to a grade 6 to 8 audience the board says. Students have an account and the digital library is board wide so they can check out books via their device.
There’s been an almost even split between e-books and audiobooks checked out by users. Some books are so popular that there is a waitlist with an average 13-day wait time according to officials.
Future plans include the opportunity for parents to access Overdrive.
The board says they won’t be getting rid of traditional libraries any time soon. “Libraries are still very important and we don’t plan on replacing them in the future.” says Laura Blaker, Communications Officer, Trillium Lakelands District School Board.
