KAWARTHA LAKES-The Bobcaygeon Poppy Project is bringing the community together through a beautiful display of creativity, generosity and remembrance.
Community members have knitted and crocheted an incredible 10,900 poppies, donated yarn and money for supplies, and volunteered their time to sew the poppies onto art installations.
After securing support from Parks Canada, the City of Kawartha Lakes and the Bobcaygeon Legion launched a campaign on Facebook in March 2026. Officials put out a call for hand knitted and crocheted poppies to be displayed in town around Remembrance Day to honour our veterans, and very quickly, the poppies started pouring in. They were arriving not only from Bobcaygeon, but from other close by communities, churches and cottagers according to officials. They soon surpassed their goal of 5,000 poppies and ended up with over 10,900! Assembly started in July, and volunteers are working hard to finish for November 1st installation.
The displays will include poppy blankets covering railings throughout town, along with colourful garlands of poppies. The installations will be on display from November 1 to 14, transforming public spaces into a vibrant tribute to our community and an opportunity to honour the courage, service and sacrifices of our veterans.
Organizers Maggie Burns, Andrea DeFalco and Alison Williams are delighted to see the project come to life and extend their heartfelt thanks to everyone who contributed their time, talents and generosity.
“The Bobcaygeon Poppy Project is a wonderful example of what can be accomplished when a community comes together to create something meaningful.”
