Harry Van Oudenaren’s Memories Of Hill Croft School For Bobcaygeon’s 150th Anniversary

KAWARTHA LAKES-After Walter Comber taught school in a classroom on the east wing of the Boyd Lumber office, he founded a private school on the northern edge of the village, on the road to Fenelon Falls. “For years that was a private boys’ school. Boys from all over the place used to come down there and were taught there. They had quite a strict discipline rule down there. I have a book that tells you at that they got up at 6 o’clock, were in the dining room at 6:15, then morning prayers. Walter was a strict Anglican. That’s the way the whole day went on.” Though the school was initially well attended, later on it “diminished. There was not much interest and he had to close it up. He went to St. Catherines to teach at Ridley College and in 1929 he died. He left his wife and daughter behind here—Georgina and Dorothy.”
