KAWARTHA LAKES-Two local residents, Carol Milroy and Dana Bachman, just returned from the 20th Anniversary Celebration of the Stephen Lewis Foundation, Grandmothers Campaign.
This celebration was held in Ottawa on October 4, 5, 6, 7. Two hundred Canadian women from Grandmothers groups all over Canada were in attendance. It was like the 60s all over again. Carol and Dana, along with grandmothers from Uganda, marched on Parliament Hill, Singing “We Will Overcome” and chanting “What do we want?” “ Human rights!” “What do we want?” “Human Health!”
Why? Today the money is needed more than ever, due to cuts in US AID. Dana and Carol met with our local MP Jamie Schmale, representative from Kawartha Lakes Haliburton. They asked that Jamie, in the budget 2026, which is coming up in November, would pledge to maintain Canada’s commitment to global health and human rights. We are proud to say that Canada has already maintained its commitment of 1.4 billion over the each of the last 6 years. Jamie pledged that he would do his utmost to ensure that this promise will be maintained in this upcoming budget for the next 4 years (until 2030) so that Canada’s ten year commitment will be fulfilled.
“Let’s be a moral leader on the world stage. The Nordic and EU Countries are looking to us for this leadership.” said Bachman.
