Police Stop For Speeding Leads To Impaired Driving Charges

NORTHUMBERLAND-The Northumberland OPP has charged an individual following a traffic enforcement stop in the Township of Hamilton.

On July 22, 2026, at approximately 12:20 a.m., an officer conducting speed enforcement on Oak Ridges Drive reportedly observed a passenger vehicle travelling at 143 km/h in a posted 80 km/h zone.

After stopping the vehicle and speaking with the driver, the officer initiated an impaired driving investigation. As a result of the investigation, the driver was taken into custody and transported to a local detachment for further testing. Police also identified a number of additional offences.

A 32-year-old from Port Hope, has been charged with:

  •         Operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration (80 plus)
  •         Dangerous operation
  •         Drive motor vehicle – perform stunt
  •         Driving motor vehicle with unsealed container of liquor
  •         Obstruct plate
  •         Fail to have insurance card
  •         Owner operate a motor vehicle without insurance
  •         Fail to surrender permit for motor vehicle

 The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Cobourg in September 2026.

In addition, a 90-day Administrative Driver’s License Suspension (ADLS) and a 14-day vehicle impoundment were imposed.
