KAWARTHA LAKES-Lakelands Public Health says swimming is not advised at six local beaches.
The Bond Street beach in Fenelon Falls, Lions Park beach in Coboconk, Norland Bathing area in Laxton, Burnt River beach in Somerville, Centennial Park West in Eldon and Four Mile Lake public beach in Somerville were all found to be moderate risk with elevated levels of water contamination. According to the Health Unit this can increase your risk of illness.
From mid-June to the end of August, when water temperatures are above 15°C, health officials monitor water quality at 76 public beaches across our region.
While beach water quality is monitored regularly, conditions can change at any time and bacteria may be present. Always swim at your own risk.
They use a three-colour system to report beach water quality:
| Risk Level | Status | What It Means |
|---|---|---|
| ???? High Risk | Beach is Closed | High bacteria levels or hazardous water conditions. DO NOT swim or enter the water. |
| ???? Moderate Risk | Swimming not Advised | Bacteria levels are elevated and may increase your risk of illness. |
| ???? Low Risk | Safe for Swimming | Water quality meets Ontario Guidelines. Swimming and wading are allowed. |
