ONTARIO-The Ontario government has completed renovations to the Regional Intermittent Unit at the Elgin-Middlesex Detention Centre in London, adding 110 beds to accommodate minimum- and medium-risk adult inmates.
“The re-opening of the Regional Intermittent Unit at the Elgin-Middlesex Detention Centre marks an important milestone in the province’s plan to ensure safety and sufficient jail capacity in both the short- and long-term,” said Solicitor General Michael Kerzner. “We’re expanding and building facilities that will help frontline staff to do their jobs safely and effectively while increasing capacity to keep violent and repeat offenders off our streets.”
The repurposed Regional Intermittent Unit will open on March 24, 2025 and create 45 new correctional officer positions in the London area. The increased capacity will support mental health services, inmates programming and staff training.
“Working families in Elgin-Middlesex-London and our region voted for law and order, and our government is delivering,” said Rob Flack, MPP for Elgin-Middlesex-London. “The added jail capacity and increased complement of correctional officers at Elgin Middlesex Detention Centre will strengthen public safety and the ability of law enforcement to deter and fight crime. This is a significant investment for our community, and I am delighted this project is complete.”
“The opening of these additional beds at the Elgin-Middlesex Detention Centre coupled with the hiring of full-time staff are the type of investments we need to improve working conditions for our members across the province”, said Janet Laverty, Ontario Public Service Employees Union, Ministry Employee Relations Committee Co-chair. “After years of neglect, this government continues to invest in improving our correctional system to ensure we have a safe work environment for staff and living environment for inmates. The beds completed today, along with the completion of other announced infrastructure projects around the province will add capacity to the system and will assist us in keeping communities safe.”
