KAWARTHA LAKES-We could be in for some rough weather today.
Significant rainfall continues this morning with strong northwesterly wind gusts expected tonight. Environment Canada says additional rainfall amounts of 15 to 25 mm is possible with northwesterly winds gusting 70 to 80 km/h. A few gusts may exceed 80 km/h near Georgian Bay.
Hydro One says persistent high winds may result in damage to the electricity grid and cause outages. Hydro One crews, damage assessors and support staff are preparing to respond to any power outages that may occur.
“We are encouraging customers to prepare for potential power outages by ensuring their emergency kit is stocked. A recent survey conducted by Innovative Research Group for Hydro One reveals that only 52 per cent of Ontarians feel prepared to manage through an extended power outage.” said Tiziana Baccega Rosa, Senior Media Relations Advisor, Hydro One.
Below is a list of critical items to include in an emergency kit:
- Water and food that won’t spoil for all family members, including pets
- A manual can opener
- Windup or battery-powered flashlight and radio
- Extra batteries
- Cash
- First aid kit and medical items
- Blankets
- Emergency numbers including Hydro One’s outage line 1-800-434-1235
- Fully charged cellphone and a backup battery pack or a corded phone; a cordless phone will not work in a power outage
- Keep your emergency kit in a backpack and make sure everyone in your home knows where to find it.
Winds will ease late tonight into Saturday morning as the low-pressure system departs.
Officials say heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads. Localized flooding in low-lying areas is possible. Strong wind gusts may toss loose objects or cause tree branches to break.
