Deadly Green Fentanyl, Suspected Crystal Meth Seized In Quinte West

KAWARTHA LAKES-The Quinte West OPP Street Crime Unit arrested two people and laid multiple charges following a traffic stop in Trenton.

At approximately 7:15 p.m. on October 13, Quinte West OPP’s CSCU assisted by members of the OPP Emergency Response Team (ERT) stopped a taxi on Byron Street after determining two people within the vehicle were wanted by police. Both accused were arrested, and following a search, a quantity of suspected crystal methamphetamine, green fentanyl, and other items suspected to be related to drug trafficking were seized including cash and cell phones according to police.

Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid that is 50 times more potent than heroin and 100 times more potent than morphine.  Just two milligrams of fentanyl is equal to 10-15 grains of table salt and is considered a lethal dose according to the US Drug Enforcement Agency.  Without laboratory testing, there is no way to know how much fentanyl is concentrated in a pill or powder.

33-year-old Kyle Laird and 34 year old and Brenda Banks both from Quinte West have been charged with the following offences:

  • Possession of a schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking – fentanyl;
  • Possession of a schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking – methamphetamine;
  • Possession of proceeds of property obtained by crime under $5000

Additionally, Laird was charged with three counts of failing to comply with a probation order and Banks was charged with one count of failing to comply with a probation order.

Both accused were held in custody and are scheduled to appear for a bail hearing at the Ontario Court of Justice in Belleville on October 14, 2022.
