COVID Outbreak Declared At Warkworth Institution After 19 Confirmed Cases

KAWARTHA LAKES-The Haliburton Kawartha Pine Ridge District Health Unit has declared a COVID outbreak at Warkworth Institution.

Officials say there are 19 cases associated with this outbreak and at least one case is consistent with the Omicron variant.

“Preliminary screening of one of the confirmed cases indicates the Omicron variant. As a result, the Health Unit is treating this as an outbreak of the Omicron variant and is working with the outbreak team at Warkworth to implement outbreak control measures.” Chandra Tremblay, HKPR told Kawartha 411 news.

The Warkworth Institution is a medium-security prison facility located in the municipality of Trent Hills. The prison is the largest federal correctional institution in Canada with a population of approximately 625 housed in five units.
