UPDATE:Severe thunderstorm warning in effect for:
- Fenelon Falls – Balsam Lake Park – Northern Kawartha Lakes
- Lindsay – Southern Kawartha Lakes
At 3:43 p.m. EDT, Environment Canada meteorologists are tracking a severe thunderstorm capable of producing very strong wind gusts, pea to dime size hail and heavy rain.
This severe thunderstorm is located near Eldon, moving northeast at 55 km/h.
Hazard: 90 km/h wind gusts and dime size hail.
Locations impacted include:
Balsam Lake Provincial Park, Indian Point Provincial Park, Canal Lake, Argyle, Eldon, Kirkfield, Mitchell Lake, West Bay, South Bay, Balsam Lake, Coboconk and Rosedale.
KAWARTHA LAKES-Environment Canada has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Watch for Kawartha Lakes and Peterborough.
Severe thunderstorm watch in effect for:
- Apsley – Woodview – Northern Peterborough County
- Fenelon Falls – Balsam Lake Park – Northern Kawartha Lakes
- Lindsay – Southern Kawartha Lakes
- Peterborough City – Lakefield – Southern Peterborough County
Conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms this afternoon into this evening.
These thunderstorms will be capable of producing strong wind gusts up to 100 km/h, large hail up to 2 cm in diameter and heavy rainfall of 50 mm within an hour.
Large hail can damage property and cause injury. Strong wind gusts can toss loose objects, damage weak buildings, break branches off trees and overturn large vehicles. Heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads. Lightning kills and injures Canadians every year. Remember, when thunder roars, go indoors!
Severe thunderstorm watches are issued when atmospheric conditions are favourable for the development of thunderstorms that could produce one or more of the following: large hail, damaging winds, torrential rainfall.
The Office of the Fire Marshal and Emergency Management recommends that you take cover immediately if threatening weather approaches.
