Thousands without power across the Kawarthas as storm blows through

KAWARTHA LAKES-Thousands of people across the Kawartha Lakes are without power tonight after a wind storm blew through this afternoon. A number of hydro poles snapped in the Glenarm area and trees are down across the region.

The following roads are closed because of downed hydro poles and lines due to the extreme winds:

  • Glenarm Road is closed between Kirkfield Road 6 and Sandringham Road
  • Porter Road is closed at Station Road
  • Royal Oak Road is closed at Little Britain Road near 426 Royal Oak Road
  • Glenarm Road is closed between Highway 46 and Windemere Road

Environment Canada issued a Wind Warning earlier on Sunday with gusts up to 100km an hour possible. Officials say damaging winds expected today and tonight.

A cold front sweeping through southern Ontario this afternoon will bring very strong southwest winds with gusts of 90 to 110 km/h. Winds are expected to ease by Monday morning.

Power is out from Baddow to Beaverton and everywhere in between as well as outages in Oakwood, Cameron, Bobcaygeon, Indian Point, Little Britain, Coboconk and more.

Almost 10,000 people are without power in the area as of 4:30pm.
