School board warns parents buses could be cancelled due to driver shortage

KAWARTHA LAKES-The Trillium Lakelands District School Board is warning parents that buses could be cancelled due to a driver shortage.

“Due to the current shortage of qualified school bus drivers, any day we could be without a driver for your child’s bus route.” said the board on Thursday.

The board says parents should make alternate transportation arrangements to get their children to and from school in the event of a cancellation.

A driver shortage forced the cancellation of nearly 200 routes in 43 schools in September. Routes serving Bowmanville, Courtice, Norwood and more were impacted. There were delays in other areas.

The Ontario government has pledged $40 million to hire additional school bus drivers and provide them with personal protective equipment.
