City wants your input on a proposed by-law to allow backyard chickens

KAWARTHA LAKES-The City is looking for input on a proposed by-law to allow backyard chickens in the municipality.

On November 9, 2019 deputation CW2019-200 was received, requesting By-Law revisions to allow for backyard chickens and a petition was submitted with over 400 signatures. As a result, Council requested staff to bring forward options to allow backyardchickens in the third quarter of 2020.

According to the City poultry production today is largely based on focused farm production that maximizes yield. Historically, backyard poultry (chickens) have been the backbone of many family properties by providing limited chickens that provide fresh eggs, meat and education to younger family members.

In many areas, municipalities are moving to allow backyard chickens in residential zones with certain restrictions.

“With standards for care and conditions, backyard flocks provide a source of food that is self-sustaining, local, organic and cost-effective. Standards can be modelled after municipalities that already allow backyard flocks to ensure there is no impact to surrounding neighbours and the reasonable enjoyment of their own properties.” said the City in a press release.

To inform the report and ultimately Council’s decision, staff are currently conducting research through consultation with internal and external stakeholders, other municipalities and the public. Municipal Law Enforcement has launched an online survey to gather the public’s input.

To participate in the survey, register for the City’s online engagement tool Jump In, Kawartha Lakes. The survey is now live and will be available for two weeks until Friday October 2.

By completing the survey, you will provide input into the process and by-law proposal to Council.
