Five dead in incident on a quiet residential street in Oshawa

DURHAM-Police are investigating a shooting on a quiet residential street in Oshawa in which five people lost their lives early this morning.

Police say on Friday, September 4 at approximately 1:20 a.m., officers responded to a residence on Parklane Avenue in Oshawa after numerous reports of gunshots. Members of the Tactical Support Unit arrived quickly and entered the residence to find five deceased people inside and one adult female who was alive but suffering from a gunshot wound. The 50-year-old female was rushed to hospital, where she was treated for a non-life-threatening injury.

All deceased members were known to each other. Investigators believe the suspect died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound and no other suspects are outstanding.

Investigators have confirmed the identity of the lone attacker in this morning’s shooting in Oshawa as a family member from Winnipeg. Mitchell Lapa, age 48, of Dalhousie Drive in Winnipeg, Manitoba is a relative of the family and was an uninvited person to the home according to police. The vehicle located at the scene with Manitoba plates is registered to LAPA.

Police say Lapa was the sole shooter in this incident and he died as a result of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.  The Homicide Unit is still investigating the motive for the shooting and will release the identity of the other deceased parties after a post mortem is conducted and all applicable next of kin are notified.

Anyone with new information about this investigation is asked to contact Det. McDermott or Det. Dorego of the Homicide Unit at 1-888-579-1520 ext. 5411 or 5319.

Anonymous information can be sent to Durham Regional Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or online at www.durhamregionalcrimestoppers.ca and tipsters may be eligible for a $2,000 cash reward.
