Severe Thunderstorm Watch issued for parts of Kawartha Lakes and Peterborough

KAWARTHA LAKES-Environment Canada has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Watch for parts of Kawartha Lakes and Peterborough.

Severe thunderstorm watch is in effect for:

  • Apsley – Woodview – Northern Peterborough County
  • Lindsay – Southern Kawartha Lakes
  • Peterborough City – Lakefield – Southern Peterborough County

Officials say conditions are favourable for the development of dangerous thunderstorms that may be capable of producing damaging wind gusts and heavy rain.

Severe thunderstorms are possible this afternoon or early this evening with wind gusts near 90 kilometres per hour moving west to east through the region.

Very strong wind gusts can damage buildings, down trees and blow large vehicles off the road according to Environment Canada. Heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads.

The Office of the Fire Marshal and Emergency Management recommends that you take cover immediately if threatening weather approaches.
