KAWARTHA LAKES-The OPP says its first use of an emergency alert using the Alert Ready system has been deemed a success.
On July 15, 2020 the system was utilized to send a public safety message to all media and cell phones in the Lanark County and Ottawa area warning of an armed and dangerous person at large, wanted in connection with a homicide.
While the primary goal of the Alert Ready message is to warn about a potential risk to public safety but the alert message also resulted in information which led to the arrest of the accused according to police.
Emergency alerts, distributed through the Alert Ready system, can be specifically targeted to the areas where an imminent danger to the public has been identified.
“Alert Ready is designed to deliver critical and potentially life-saving alerts to Canadians through television, radio and compatible wireless devices. The Alert Ready system was developed and operates in partnership with federal, provincial and territorial emergency management officials, Environment and Climate Change Canada, Pelmorex, the broadcasting industry and wireless service providers.” said the OPP.
