Local Crime Stoppers website appears to have been targeted by hackers

KAWARTHA LAKES-The only person “wanted” on the Kawartha Lakes-Haliburton Crime Stoppers website this morning was Breaking Bad’s Walter White, AKA Teddy.

In an apparent hack of the crime busting website the only criminal posted was the notorious, drug dealing TV show character.

The Kawartha Lakes Police Service sent out an email to media saying they were having problems with the Crimestoppers website and advising to remove links.

Inspector Kirk Robertson says “Efforts are being made to rectify this issue and the cause is not known at this time.”

The fictitious person has since been removed but the site is still not available.

UPDATE:Late Thursday afternoon Crime Stoppers issued a statement saying the site had not been hacked.

“The image on th site was used by the website company, Andersoft, as a placeholder while the website was under development. This is a practice the company uses across all their websites before an organization takes over. However through an oversight on our end, we missed this before a published update of the website.”

The group goes on the say tips can still be received anonymously, the information is secure and has not been hacked.
