KAWARTHA LAKES-One resident of Pinecrest Nursing Home passed away overnight bringing the toal COVID-19 related deaths in the home to 27. The wife of one resident also passed away.
Mary Carr, the homes administrator says Pinecrest plans for and prioritizes infection control – whether it is the flu or the common cold but the severity of COVID-19 presented unique challenges for staff and the facility.
“At the beginning of this outbreak, we followed existing outbreak management plans, including the isolation of symptomatic residents. However, due to the size of our home and limited front-line capacity, we have been faced with unprecedented circumstances.”
On April 3rd Carr anounced that over the last week they had moved all residents who were ill to one section of the home to distance them from healthy residents and mitigate any potential spread of the virus. At least 16 people had died at that point.
Today’s death was a resident who was on the “healthy” side of the home according to our sources.
More than two dozen staff at the home have also tested positive for Coronavirus.
Meanwhile the number of confrimed cases in the City of Kawartha Lakes skyrocketed to 82 on Monday from 50 on the weekend. The Health Unit says its because the province changed direction on testing.
“Provincial direction has changed so now all residents and staff in a long-term care home in an outbreak are to be tested for COVID-19.” officials posted on the website.
