Special Investigations Unit says fraudsters using it’s toll free number

KAWARTHA LAKES-Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU)says they have recently become aware of a group using the SIU’s toll free number to make fraudulent calls.

The call appears to be coming from 1-800-787-8529 according to the SIU. In some cases, the person is told that there is something wrong with their Social Insurance Number, and that if they don’t continue with the call by pressing ‘1’ or ‘2’, the person will be charged or jailed.

Please be aware that the SIU does not contact individuals by phone for this type of personal information. If you receive a call such as this, please report it to:

The SIU is an arm’s length agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.
