Toronto street gangs move into Kawartha Lakes to sell drugs

KAWARTHA LAKES-The City of Kawartha Lakes Police Service arrested ten individuals allegedly involved in the distribution of controlled substances, and seized quantities of cocaine, crack cocaine, heroin, fentanyl, and prescription medication. Investigators further seized more than $5000 in proceeds of crime, along with a prohibited weapon and a replica handgun.

On February 12, 2019 members of the City of Kawartha Lakes Police Service launched a project to investigate the sale and distribution of controlled substances in the Kawartha Lakes area.

One member from the Uniform Branch of the police service was assigned to the Drug Enforcement Unit on a temporary basis to assist the Drug Enforcement Officer. Officers conducted investigations which intercepted individuals “in-transit” between drug trafficking locations.

A Controlled Drugs and Substances Act Search Warrant was also executed at a residence known to be trafficking in narcotics.
As a result of this initiative,

Individuals arrested have included members of Toronto area street gangs who have been attending the Kawartha Lakes area solely for the purposes of trafficking-controlled substances.

The following charges have been laid:
5 counts of possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking;
4 counts of possession of a controlled substance;
2 counts of possession of property/proceeds obtained by crime;
2 counts of possession of a prohibited weapon.
1 count of failing to comply with a court order.
