Barn roof torn off in wind storm Monday night

KAWARTHA LAKES-Arlan Telford’s barn has stood the test of time for almost 100 years. But on Monday night that all came to an end. “When I got up this morning I thought something didn’t look right out in the yard, but it was still a bit dark.” Telford explained to Kawartha 411 News. “So I got the flashlight and went out and looked and half my barn roof was missing.”

Telford says the barn on Bury’s Green Road near Bobcaygeon, is close to 100 years old and his family has owned it since 1950. He says this is the first time something like this has happened. “There was a big roar that went through here last night at 7-7:30pm, a hell of a roar,” he says. “I said to my partner, what’s that noise?”

As quick as the wind came up it went away and Telford never thought of it again until this morning. Now he thinks it was either a tornado or a down draft. High winds and freezing rain hammered the Kawartha Lakes on Monday night. There have been no other reports of Tornadic activity.

Luckily there were no animals in that end of the barn at the time. Telford thinks it will be a big job to repair. “That piece that lifted off was 40-50 feet and is very heavy.” he says.  He’s notified his insurance company and is considering calling Environment Canada to investigate if a tornado did touch down.
