KAWARTHA LAKES- Hold on to your hats, it could get very windy and wet tomorrow.
Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement for the Kawartha Lakes and much of Peterborough City and County. Â Very strong winds, possibly with gusts up to 90 km an hour are expected Sunday afternoon into Sunday night.
A low pressure system developing over Colorado is forecast to track northeast across the Great Lakes and Central Ontario into Quebec tonight and Sunday according to Environment Canada.
A sharp cold front associated with this low pressure area will blast across Southern Ontario Sunday. Very strong southwest to west winds and falling temperatures are expected to herald the arrival of this cold front in the afternoon.
Wind gusts of 70 to 80 km/h will be quite likely in most areas. Occasional gusts to 90 km/h are not completely out of the question, especially in exposed areas near the Great Lakes.
Environment Canada says these winds may be strong enough to cause some tree damage in exposed areas Sunday, leading to the potential for isolated power outages.
A second Special Weather Stetement was issued for Fenelon Falls – Balsam Lake Park – Northern Kawartha Lakes.
A soaking rainfall tonight into Sunday, with strong winds expected Sunday.
Latest computer models continue to show that this system may bring a significant rainfall to the region tonight and Sunday due to that same system coming from Colorado.
Total rainfall amounts of 25 to 50 mm are quite possible by Sunday night, with the greatest chance for the heavier rainfall amounts approaching 50 mm being across the Bruce Peninsula and in areas east of Georgian Bay.
