Lindsay Ex goes baby-friendly

KAWARTHA LAKES-The Lindsay Ex is just around the corner and excitement is growing for the young and young at heart. For the second year, even babies will be able to enjoy the fun.

A baby-friendly area for families will again be available during the fair in a trailer conveniently-located. Families will be able to have a quiet place to rest with their young children, or to feed and change their babies. “We’re pleased to again offer families a private and quiet space that they can go to with their babies or very young children while they are at the fair,” says Beatrice Kowalska, a breastfeeding coalition member and Family Health Nurse with the Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge District Health Unit. “The baby- friendly space is great for women who want to breastfeed their baby, or parents who just want to take a break with their children.”

Kowalska credits the Lindsay Exhibition for continuing to provide a family-friendly environment that supports breastfeeding. The breastfeeding coalition is also appreciative of Commonwell Mutual Insurance Group for its generosity in supporting the baby-friendly area.

The trailer space is being provided by the Commonwell Mutual Insurance Group and the City of Kawartha Lakes Breastfeeding Coalition. While the Ontario Human Rights Commission states women have the right to breastfeed in public spaces, Kowalska notes some women prefer a private and quiet space in which to do this. “Providing a welcoming and supportive environment for breastfeeding makes it easier for women to feed their babies for as long as they like,” she says. “This allows them to be out and about enjoying community events like the Lindsay Exhibition.”

The CKL Breastfeeding Coalition promotes positive attitudes towards breastfeeding and supports initiatives aimed at making Kawartha Lakes a breastfeeding-friendly community.

The 2017 Lindsay ‘Ex’ runs September 20-24 at the Lindsay Fairgrounds. The trailer is open most days during the Ex from 10 am to 8 pm, except for Wednesday (Sept. 20) when it opens at noon and on Sunday (Sept. 24) when it closes at 6 pm.
