The Peterborough Police Service is warning residents about a new scam circulating in our area.
A man in his 70’s, called police to report a fraud on April 21st. The man told police he had received an email stating he would get $100,000 if he sent $1,150 to the “Bill Gates Fund.” The man sent the $1,150 through a wire transfer to someone located in Texas but has never received the $100,000.
The Peterborough Police Service reminds residents to use caution when providing any personal information over the phone or wiring money to someone you don’t know.
Police are offering a few tips for keeping your money in your wallet:
- If you have been approached by someone asking you to transfer money for them, it is probably a scam.
2. Ask Yourself: Is it really safe to transfer money for someone I do not know?
3. Never give personal information or bank information over the phone.
4. It’s okay to hang up. Call a trusted family member, friend, or your bank to get a second opinion on the call.
5. Do your research first.
6. If it’s too good to be true, it probably is.
7. Examine the information on the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre website for information on how to protect yourself against money transfer scams.
To report a scam please call the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre Toll Free at 1-888-495-8501.
