“This photograph was a glass negative taken by Mr. W.T. Comber around 1900. It was taken on Front Street East near the Ambassador Lodge. Looking south across the river, one can see what is now the Buckeye Centre. It was then the home of Dr. Bonnell, who kept all sorts of animals behind his house. In the distance are the telegraph poles feeding the telephone wires across the swing bridge. They had to be that tall so that steamboats going through the canal could pass under them.”
