NORTHUMBERLAND-A two-day OPP Commercial Motor Vehicle Inspection blitz resulted in three vehicles being pulled off the road and numerous provincial offence notices issued.
Northumberland and Peterborough Detachments of the OPP alongside specialized OPP Commercial Motor Vehicle (CMV) Inspectors, conducted the enforcement initiative in Northumberland County.
CMV Inspectors are specially trained to conduct detailed inspections of commercial vehicles and drivers to ensure compliance with safety requirements. These inspections help identify safety concerns, mechanical defects, and regulatory violations that may place all road users at risk.
During the initiative, officers conducted commercial vehicle inspections, including seven Level I inspections, the most comprehensive commercial motor vehicle inspection standard used in North America. As a result of the enforcement effort:
- Three commercial motor vehicles were placed out of service
- 62 Provincial Offence Notices were issued
Officers identified a range of violations, including:
– Operating a Commercial Motor Vehicle with a major defect
– Defective braking systems
– Failing to properly conduct and document daily vehicle inspections
– Failing to report and record vehicle defects
– Electronic Logging Device violations, including failing to equip vehicles with required devices and associated information packets
– Record of duty status violations
– Operating vehicles with inoperative seat belt assemblies
– Permit and Commercial Vehicle Operator’s Registration (CVOR) documentation violations
On July 17, two commercial motor vehicles were placed out of service following inspections that identified significant safety concerns. One inspection alone resulted in 33 charges being laid against the driver and carrier company for a variety of safety and regulatory violations.
