KAWARTHA LAKES-This is a photograph of the swing bridge over the canal under construction, with the first Rockland House behind it, which burned in 1904. There was no need for a bridge in this location until the canal was built through this Bobcaygeon island in the 1830s. While the first bridge was presumably wood, by the end of the century, steel bridges had become the norm in villages like Bobcaygeon. This swing bridge had its pivot pier and turntable south of the canal, while the current swing bridge pivots on the north bank.

This is Part 5 of our series on the 150th anniversary of Bobcaygeon.
