KAWARTHA LAKES-This year marks the 150th anniversary of the founding of Bobcaygeon. This is part 3 of our series.
“This is the oldest picture of Bobcaygeon I have. It is a photograph of a painting of the locks around 1834. To the right is Mr. Need’s sawmill and to the left, the grist mill.” These mills were built for Thomas Need, who at the time owned the village of Bobcaygeon. Mossom Boyd started as his employee at the mill, then when Need returned to England, Mossom was trusted to manage the mills. Many years later he purchased Bobcaygeon and the mills from Need. Boyd built a new sawmill on Little Bob Channel near Pigeon Lake, but the grist mill continued to operate in this location into the twentieth century.”
