KAWARTHAS-A new Harris Poll Canada survey on behalf of HelloFresh finds that Canadian families are caught in repetitive dinner patterns and face significant barriers when it comes to weeknight meal challenges that become especially pressing as school routines resume.
Survey Highlights:
- 62% of Canadians say they eat the same dinners week after week, citing familiarity (53%), cost (44%), and simplicity (40%) as key reasons.
- 73% face at least one cooking obstacle on a regular basis, including arriving home late (35%), lack of dinner ideas (31%), or missing groceries (27%).
- 87% of parents with school-aged children have sit-down dinners most days, underlining the value of family mealtime.
- 49% describe cooking as stress-relieving when they feel supported, but many lack tools or time to make it enjoyable.
- Canadians cook for multiple reasons: 51% to save money, 49% for health, and 45% rely on recipes passed down through their families.
“As families transition back into the school year, dinner time becomes both a challenge and an opportunity,” says Coby-Sue Neumann, Director of Culinary at HelloFresh Canada. “The data shows that while most parents value gathering around the table, they are looking for more support to break out of repetitive routines and reduce stress in the kitchen.”
The findings paint a clear picture: while Canadians want dinnertime to serve as a moment of connection and calm, barriers like time pressure, lack of variety, and grocery hurdles often get in the way.
Family Mealtime as a Reset
Much like New Year’s, the start of the school year is viewed by many households as a reset moment. With over eight in ten families prioritizing sit-down meals, the demand for solutions that balance nutrition, ease, and family-friendly appeal is high.
Spotlight on Kid-Approved Meals
The survey also points to the importance of children’s preferences. Parents often struggle to introduce variety without resistance, making kid-tested favourites, from tacos to pasta to classic comfort dishes, a popular choice.
