OPP Reminding Boaters About Wearing Life Jackets After Boat Overturned On Rice Lake

NORTHUMBERLAND-The Northumberland OPP rescued two people after their boat overturned on Rice Lake.

On July 4, 2025, at approximately 5:25 p.m., police responded to the vicinity of a marina in the Township of Hamilton.

Police say both people on board had access to life jackets at the time the boat became submerged. The Fire Department and Emergency Medical Services (EMS) were also dispatched to assist.

The individuals were able to make their way to the shoreline but were unable to climb onto land due to the terrain. They were safely rescued by the fire department’s boat and transported to the marina for medical assessment. Fortunately, no injuries were reported. The vessel was removed from the lake on July 8, 2025.

Police say this incident serves as a strong reminder of the importance of wearing personal flotation devices. When the unexpected happens on the water, they can make all the difference.
