ONTARIO-Two people have been charged in connection with incidents in which police believe rocks were thrown at moving vehicles in Markham.
Between Friday, September 20, 2024, and Sunday, November 30, 2024, the Aurora OPP received multiple reports of rocks being deliberately thrown at moving vehicles by a passing vehicle or person. One of these incidents resulted in a serious collision, in which two individuals suffered life-threatening injuries. In another incident, a rock was thrown at the windshield of an occupied bus traveling on Highway 48, north of Major Mackenzie Drive in Markham. No injuries were reported. Similar incidents were also reported within York Regional Police (YRP) jurisdiction.
As a result of the investigation, on Wednesday, July 2, 2025, two 18-year-old males of Markham and Richmond Hill, were arrested and each charged with the following Criminal Code offences:
• Aggravated assault, section 268
• Mischief endangering life, section 430(2) – two counts
• Mischief damage to property, section 430(1)
As the incidents occurred when both accused were youths, their names are protected under the Youth Criminal Justice Act and cannot be released.
Both accused have been released and are scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Newmarket at a later date.
