Police And Ministry Officials Relocate Bear Found In A Tree In Lindsay

KAWARTHA LAKES-Kawartha Lakes Police Service officers responded to a call for a bear on a property on Elm Tree Rd near Highway 7 in Lindsay on Wednesday.

Police say the young bear was not able to be safely moved along from the area which required the assistance of the Ministry of Natural Resources to relocate it to a new home.

Encounters like this are more frequent this time of year as young bears are leaving their mothers to live on their own. In most cases they avoid human contact and don’t require any police response.
It’s important to stay safe and be Bear Wise. Here are some essential tips to prevent attracting bears to your property:
  • Store food and garbage in bear-proof containers. Never leave food out in the open.
  • Feed birds in the winter only.
  • Clean your barbeque frequently.
  • Know What to Do: If you encounter a bear, stay calm. Back away slowly, make noise, and prepare to use bear spray if necessary.
Report Sightings: Call the Bear Wise reporting line at 1-866-514-2327 for non-emergency encounters.
