KAWARTHA LAKES-Globus Theatre’s Youth Winter Arts Showcase is on May 9th 2025. Performing ten different ten-minute plays, this annual showcase is the perfect opportunity to appreciate young talent in Kawartha Lakes.
Globus’s General Manager and Youth Winter Arts (YWA) Program Leader Rebecca Anne Bloom explains, “YWA started with the goal of providing an opportunity for older youth and young adults to pursue the theatrical arts and explore their creativity in this rural community. Over the last three years this program has had many participants return each year, as well as welcomed new faces to the initiative.”
Aspiring actor Stella Handley is one of those returning faces. She says that over the years, “I’ve learned how a production is run and all the hard work that is put into one.” Stella is most excited about the opportunity to perform on May 9th.
The focus of this year’s YWA program was scene work. By focusing on very short, ten-minute plays, the young actors were able to dive headfirst into character development and staging. These seemingly small details make a huge difference in a performance.
“I have been a part of YWA for two years, and the time I have spent there has been invaluable,” says SODA Student and YWA participant Blake Robertson. “Before YWA, I struggled with finding myself in the world of acting—just thinking that I could only do one thing—but Rebecca has made me feel comfortable enough to go outside my box, acting in scenes I had never thought possible. YWA has also made it very clear to me what I want to do post-secondary, encouraging me to take what I have learned into the real world of acting.”
Rebecca is thrilled to have “had the privilege of watching these amazing individuals grow in confidence and experience, with several of them applying (and being accepted) to post-secondary programs for Drama and Theatre.”
The Youth Winter Arts Program is an extension of Globus Theatre’s School Of Dramatic Arts (SODA). SODA cultivates creativity in a safe space by offering accessible creative arts programming to kids, youth, and adults in the city of Kawartha Lakes.
All the youth participating in the 2025 Youth Winter Arts Program were subsidized in order to remove any barriers to entry. As a registered charity, Globus Theatre can offer subsidies for programs such as these thanks to the generosity of STAR supporters who make regular donations, the Bobcaygeon CHEST Fund, and to fundraising events.
Globus Theatre’s 2025 fundraiser takes place on May 10th. Join us for a night of disco and trivia complete with raffle prizes and a toonie auction.
