KAWARTHA LAKES-Kawartha Lakes Fire Rescue Service is reminding residents that the annual burn ban remains in effect despite the significant damage caused by the recent ice storm.
Over the weekend, the community faced severe impacts, including downed trees, widespread power outages, and hazardous conditions. Emergency responders have been working around the clock to assist residents and respond to all types of urgent calls.
“We understand that many residents are eager to clean up fallen trees and storm debris; however, we urge everyone to continue following the burn ban currently in place. Our emergency services are operating at their limits, and we cannot risk additional strain caused by preventable fires from unauthorized burning. Despite the wet conditions in the municipality, we’ve already had a few grass fire calls over the past couple of days.” said the City.
For those needing assistance with storm cleanup, please consider using the following resources:
- Tipping Fees Waived at Landfills: The City of Kawartha Lakes has waived tipping fees for brush and tree storm debris. All landfills will accept brush and tree storm debris during their regular operating hours. Locations and hours of operation can be found on the municipality’s Landfills webpage.
- Hydro and Emergency Support: Hydro crews are working diligently to restore power as quickly as possible. If you are without power, please visit warming centers or emergency shelters listed on the Ice Storm Updates webpage.
- Volunteer and Community Assistance: Local organizations may be offering cleanup support for those unable to manage on their own.
If you see downed power lines, stay clear and report them immediately to Hydro One or your local utility provider. For all fire-related emergencies, call 911.
