St. Patricks Day Weekend Police Patrols In Peterborough Result In Numerous Impaired Driving Charges

PETERBOROUGH-Officers with the Peterborough Police Service conducted two RIDE details over the weekend.

In total 1,194 vehicles were stopped in three different locations in the City of Peterborough.

On Saturday night:

  • 200 vehicles were checked
  • 15 sobriety tests were administered
  • 1 person was charged with impaired
  • 1 person received a warning

On Sunday night:

  • 994 vehicles were checked
  • 11 sobriety tests were administered

At approximately 11:20pm on Saturday, March 15, 2025, officers were conducting a RIDE check on Water Street near Carnegie Avenue.  During the check an 18-year-old Newcastle man was stopped and as a result he was charged with:

  • Operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration (80 plus)

The driver was also issued two provincial offence notices for:

  • Person under 19 years having liquor (Liquor Licence Act)
  • Driving motor vehicle with open container of liquor (Liquor Licence Act)

The accused was issued an automatic 90-day licence suspension and seven-day vehicle impoundment.

The accused was released on an appearance notice and is scheduled to appear in court April 22, 2025.

A 23-year-old Douro-Dummer man is facing charges after an incident early Sunday morning.

At approximately 12:25am on March 16, 2025, an officer on general patrol spotted a vehicle being driven erratically after a being stopped at a red light at Water Street and King Street.  The officer conducted a traffic stop and noticed signs of impairment with the driver.  However, the driver refused to provide a breath sample.

As a result, a 23-year-old Douro-Dummer man was arrested and charged with:

  • Failure or refusal to comply with demand
  • Careless Driving (Highway Traffic Act)

The accused was issued an automatic 90-day license suspension and a seven-day vehicle impoundment.

The accused was released on an appearance notice and is scheduled to appear in court April 29, 2025.

A 29-year-old Peterborough man is facing charges after a single vehicle collision early Sunday morning.

At approximately 1:00 am on March 16, 2025, officers were called to the Guthrie Drive and Bensfort Road area about a collision and that the driver had fled the scene.  Officers located a man matching the description given to police walking on the road and noticed signs of impairment.  During the investigation, officers learned that the man was a suspended driver according to police.

As a result, a 29-year-old Peterborough man was arrested and charged with:

  • Operation while impaired – alcohol and drugs
  • Operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration (80 plus)
  • Driving while under suspension (Highway Traffic Act)
  • Fail to remain (Highway Traffic Act)

The accused was issued an automatic 90-day license suspension and a seven-day vehicle impoundment.

The accused was released on an appearance notice and is scheduled to appear in court April 29, 2025.

An 18-year-old Peterborough man is facing a number of charges after an incident involving a motorcycle Saturday evening.

At approximately 9:00pm on March 15, 2025, officers were made aware of a motorcycle being driven erratically (perform a wheelie) and at a high rate of speed southbound on Aylmer Street from McDonnel Street. A short time later, the motorcycle was spotted again and an officer on general patrol attempted to conduct a traffic stop, but the motorcyclist did not stop.  The pursuit was called off for safety reasons according to police.

At 2:25am on Sunday, March 16, 2025, officers were called to a collision on George Street near King Street where it had been reported that a motorcycle had collided with a parked vehicle. Police say upon arrival, the driver of the motorcycle was being held by two security guards.  Officers noted that it was the same motorcycle from earlier in the evening. During a conversation with the driver, officers noticed signs of impairment.  The driver was taken to Peterborough Regional Health Centre for treatment of injuries and released.

As a result of the investigation, an 18-year-old Peterborough man was arrested and charged with:

  • Operation while impaired – alcohol and drugs
  • Dangerous operation
  • Flight from peace officer
  • Operate a motor vehicle without insurance (Compulsory Automobile Insurance Act)
  • Fail to apply for permit on becoming owner (Highway Traffic Act)
  • No directional signals (Highway Traffic Act)
  • Drive motor vehicle, no plates (Highway Traffic Act)
  • Drive motor vehicle – no licence (Highway Traffic Act)
  • Drive without proper rear light – motorcycle (Highway Traffic Act)
  • Drive motor vehicle – Perform stunt – all tires not in contact with highway (Highway Traffic Act)

In connection with the perform stunt charge, the accused was issued a 30-day license suspension was issued and 14-day vehicle impoundment.

The accused was also issued an automatic 90-day license suspension and seven-day vehicle impoundment in connection with the impaired charge.

The accused was released on an undertaking and is scheduled to appear in court April 29, 2025.
