World Series Hero Freddie Freeman Has Ties To Peterborough

PETERBOROUGH-Freddie Freeman has hit a home run in his last six World Series games, four of which were this season. In the first game of the 2024 World Series Freeman became the first to hit a walk-off grand slam, helping the LA Dodgers to a win.

Freeman was born in California but both of his parents are Canadian. His father Frederick is from Windsor, Ontario and his mother Rosemary was from Peterborough, Ontario. His mother passed away from cancer when he was just 10 years old and in interviews he has talked about wearing a strand of her hair in a locket around his neck. He also says he wears long sleeved shirts when he plays baseball in honour of his mom and said in a post game interview his he felt his mom would be proud of him.

“I think even if I hit zero every single season she’s still be proud of me. It’s hard to even think about.”

Freeman was drafted by the Atlanta Braves when he was just 17 years old. He won the Golden Glove in 2018 and the MVP award in 2020 and is an eight time All Star. He represented Canada at the World Baseball Classic in 2017 and 2023.

Freeman credits his dad for his success. “”He’s been throwing me batting practice since I can remember. Mu swing is because of him, my approach is because of him, I am who I am because of him. All the batting practice all the relentless hours we spent on the playing field we still do it. In the off season we are still doing batting practice.” Freeman said in a media scrum after his walk-off grand slam.

“That’s mostly his moment because if he didn’t throw me batting practice if he didn’t love the game of baseball I wouldn’t be here playing this game so thats Fred Freemans moment right there.”

The Dodgers lead the series against the New York Yankees.
