KAWARTHA LAKES-The City’s mattress recycling program has been temporarily suspended until further notice.
The City says the recycling contractor has informed them they will not be able to accept mattresses collected at the Lindsay Ops landfill until at least late September, possibly later.
Since recycled mattress space at the Lindsay Ops landfill is limited, officials are asking the community to refrain from bringing mattresses or box springs to the landfill until further notice. Â The sale of curbside mattress tags online and at our service centres is also suspended until the contractor is able to collect our recycled mattresses again.
If you have already purchased a mattress tag and scheduled a pick-up with Miller Waste, it will be honoured. If you’ve purchased a mattress tag and haven’t scheduled your pick-up yet, please refrain from doing so until the program returns.
The City started recycling mattresses at the Lindsay Ops landfill in September 2018 and in 2021 banned mattresses from being disposed of anywhere but the Lindsay Ops landfill.  As of April 2024 over 31,167 mattresses have been kept from going into local landfills.
