KAWARTHA LAKES-Michael Nieukirk and Jordan Cleveland of Peterborough, Jordan Fountain and Jeremy Tracey of Ennismore and Bellmere Winds Golf Resort PGA Pro Chris Medford will have a golfers dream come true with the opportunity to win a Canadian National Championship.
The team won the Ontario Northeast RBC PGA Scramble Final last week hosted at The Rock Golf Club in Muskoka, finishing ahead of 19 teams to earn a trip to the national final at prestigious Cabot Links Golf Course in Inverness, Nova Scotia in early October.
“It was quite the rollercoaster of a round, lots of highs and lows, lots of putts made from our pro,” said Nieukirk. “On the third hole, we had a chip in and then a 70-foot birdie putt on the par 3. Near the end, pro came up clutch with a 50-foot eagle putt.”
The team qualified for the 18-hole RBC PGA Scramble regional tournament by winning the local qualifier event also held at Saugeen Golf Club earlier this summer. The team-focused scramble format considers the handicap of each golfer when calculating their final score, allowing anyone who has a registered Golf Canada handicap the chance to participate and win.
The group will compete against teams from all over the country at the October final.
“The local qualifier at Bellmere was great, and as a whole, the scramble is amazing being able to get to compete like this all together,” said Nieukirk. “Chris has been to Cabot before and was telling us about it. We never thought we’d have the opportunity but here we are.”
Now in its ninth year, the RBC PGA Scramble is the largest grassroots amateur golf program in Canada. In 2024, participants competed across 180 local qualifiers from coast-to-coast. For more information, visit rbcpgascramble.com
