KAWARTHA LAKES-The August Civic Day long weekend of 2024 is here and an increase in traffic through the county is expected along with an increased police presence on roadways, trails and on the water.
Officers from the OPP will continue to target the ‘Big Four’ – speeding, distracted driving, seatbelts and impaired driving. This year, we will also be focusing on the ‘Move Over Law’.
This law requires drivers to slow down and proceed with caution when passing an emergency vehicle parked on the side of the highway with lights activated. This includes ambulances, police vehicles and tow trucks.
If the highway has more than one lane, the law requires drivers to move over and leave one lane between their vehicle and the parked emergency vehicle if it is safe to do so.
Highway Traffic Act Sections 159(2) and 159(3) and can be found at: Highway Traffic Act, R.S.O. 1990, c. H.8 (ontario.ca).
Northumberland OPP and others say they will be increasing patrols and enforcement in these areas to ensure compliance and to prevent collisions before they happen.
“We encourage all drivers to be vigilant, follow traffic laws, and drive responsibly.” said police, “Remember, safe driving is everyone’s responsibility. Let’s work together to keep our roads safe and ensure that everyone has a safe enjoyable Civic Day Long Weekend.”
