NORTHUMBERLAND-The OPP says that illegal dumping of garbage is an offence and those found in violation will be charged.
On July 25, 2025, at approximately 8:20 a.m., police responded to a complaint regarding garbage that was illegally dumped adjacent to a trail in the vicinity of Bowmanton Road in Alnwick-Haldimand Township.
Anyone caught illegally dumping may be charged with one or more of the following:
·        Engage in Prohibited Activity – Trespass to Property Act
·        Littering Highway Prohibited – Highway Traffic Act
·        Deposit Waste without Environmental Approval – Environmental Protection Act
·        Illegal Dumping – Town or Township By-Law
Clean-up efforts can be costly for taxpayers and this is not a victimless crime. It is one that impacts the environment and quality of life in a community. The OPP are requesting citizens contact the police immediately when they observe suspicious vehicles dumping unknown materials and garbage. Please note the vehicle description, licence plate number, occupant description and direction of travel.
