Impaired Driving Related Charges Laid After Traffic Complaint About Swerving Vehicle

NORTHUMBERLAND-Northumberland OPP has charged a novice driver with refusal following a traffic complaint.

On July 15, 2024, at approximately 9:15 p.m., Police responded to a traffic complaint regarding a motorist on Little Lake Road in the Municipality of Brighton. The complainant advised that the vehicle was swerving and travelling at a very slow rate of speed.

Officers located the described vehicle and conducted a traffic stop. Upon speaking with the driver officer made an Approved Screening Device (ASD) demand of which the driver reportedly refused to comply.

21-year-old Sankeethan Nagarajah of Colborne, has been arrested and charged with:

–      Failure or refusal to comply with demand

–      Novice driver refuse to provide breath sample

–      Driving motor vehicle with liquor readily available.

The individual had their driver’s licence suspended for 90 days and the vehicle impounded for seven days. The accused is scheduled to appear before then Ontario Court of Justice in Cobourg at a future date.
