KAWARTHA LAKES-OPPÂ officers across East Region, including Kawartha Lakes, laid a total of 2,278 charges during Canada Road Safety Week, May 14-20, which included the long weekend.
The initial results include:
- Speeding – 1,522
- Stunt Driving – 41
- Impaired charges – 55
- Careless Driving – 19
- Distracted Driving – 22
- Seatbelt charges – 96
The remainder of charges fall under the Highway Traffic Act, Liquor Licence Act, Off Road Vehicles Act, Compulsory Automobile Insurance Act and Canada Shipping Act.
OPP officers will continue to focus throughout the summer on the “Big Four” factors in serious and fatal collisions: aggressive driving, inattentive driving, impaired driving and lack of occupant restraints. This includes the major highways and all other roads.
Police say a plane from the OPP Aviation Services provided an additional perspective for officers, resulting in numerous charges. That plane will be back in the area over the summer months.
“This is not about the tickets and charges; it’s about modifying driver behaviours to make our roadways safer for everyone.” – Acting Inspector Chris Beechey, OPP East Region Traffic & Marine Manager
