PETERBOROUGH-A-19-ear-old man has been airlifted to hospital after his motorcycle allegedly struck a tree and crashed into the ditch on County Road 32 on Wednesday, May 15.
Shortly after 7:00pm, the Peterborough County OPP and other emergency services attended the scene of a motorcycle crash on County Road 32 (CR32) in the Douro-Dummer Township. Police say the vehicle had been travelling northbound on CR32 when the rider lost control of the motorcycle as its wheel came in contact with the gravel shoulder. The motorcycle left the roadway striking a tree and ejecting the rider. A passerby saw the motorcycle rider in the ditch waiving for help and stopped to offer assistance. Upon arrival, EMS attended to the rider, a 19-year-old male from Peterborough, who was later transported by ORNGE Air to a trauma centre in Toronto for treatment.
CR32 was closed for several hours while police and emergency crews dealt with the collision scene.
Every year, dozens of motorcyclists are killed in preventable collisions on OPP-patrolled roads. Over the past 10 years, 370 motorcyclists have died in collisions in OPP jurisdictions. Motorcycle riders need to take all precautions possible to ensure their safety. The statistics serve as a reminder that even safe motorcyclists are vulnerable road users. They are often not seen by drivers of other vehicles. All drivers and motorcyclists need to be safe, defensive, attentive drivers when sharing the road.
