KAWARTHA LAKES-Kawartha 411 News has learned that Fleming College is cutting programs including a a very popular program.
Students contacted Kawartha 411 to say they were told the Heavy Equipment Technician Program will end in December when the current group of students completes the program.
“I find it totally shocking” said the mother of one of the students who didn’t want to be named. “A highly successful program where grads are usually hired before they even finish their program. Well respected by big industries who sponsored and donate equipment to the program and know Fleming grads are the best of the best.”
On Wednesday the college said it was cutting two dozen programs after the federal cap on international students left it with funding shortfalls. When the Federal government announced the cap Fleming President Maureen Adamson said it would be “a staggering loss’ and warned that the move would create a great deal of uncertainty for the Fleming community and the broader community as well.
“This announcement has an immense adverse human and economic impact for our region.” Adamson said in a statement released on Tuesday night. “It is important to recognize the relationship between international students and our local economies. The implementation of international student caps poses a threat not only to the educational experiences of all of our students but also to the vitality of our regional economy. The economic impact of a 50% reduction of international student enrollment will be a staggering loss to our communities: Peterborough, Lindsay and Haliburton.”
Adamson says international students make up almost 30% of the college’s student body.
In a letter sent to staff announcing the cuts and shared with the students, Adamson said officials are attempting to stabilize the institution and that current students aren’t impacted.
