KAWARTHA LAKES-Congratulations to the I. E. Weldon Varsity Girls Curling Team!
On March 19, the team travelled to Kingston to compete at the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Association (OFSAA) Curling Champions, after securing victory in both the Kawarthas and Central Ontario Secondary Schools Association (COSAA) Championships.
We are told it’s the first time since 1998 the school has won the gold in this area.
See the tournament summary below from IEWSS Varsity Girls Curling Team coach, Katie Forde:
“During the intense round-robin play, our girls faced tough competition, suffering a setback in their first game against a formidable Uxbridge team. However, they quickly rallied, triumphing in the subsequent four matches with scores of 11-4, 6-5, 9-4, and an impressive 12-0.
In the quarter-finals, they faced off against Elmira, seeking redemption from last year’s defeat in the same scenario. This time, our girls displayed remarkable resilience, securing a hard-fought victory in extra ends and eliminating their rivals from contention.
Their momentum only grew stronger as they progressed, claiming a decisive 8-4 victory against West Niagara in the semi-finals.
Finally, they faced Marymount Academy in the ultimate showdown. From the very start, our girls exhibited exceptional teamwork and skill, establishing an early lead and maintaining their composure throughout the game. With a final score of 7-3, they emerged triumphant, seizing the coveted gold.”
Congratulations to all involved!
