Former Canadian Prime Minister Brian Mulroney Dies

KAWARTHA LAKES-Former Prime Minister Brian Mulroney has died. He was 84.

Mulroney’s daughter Caroline announced his death on Twitter.

“On behalf of my mother and our family, it is with great sadness we announce the passing of my father, The Right Honourable Brian Mulroney, Canada’s 18th Prime Minister.”

She says Mulroney died peacefully, surrounded by family.

Former Conservative Peterborough MP Dean Del Mastro posted a photo on Facebook of Mulroney making a speech with Delmastro smiling as he looked on and offered his condolences.

“One of the truly great honors in my life was being able to call the Rt. Honorable Brian Mulroney my friend.” Del Mastro said.  “He was such a special guy; a political giant. His leadership led Canada away from years of economic decline and paved the way to Canada’s prosperity and success that so many now take for granted. His annual calls at Christmas just to say hello and ask about my family spoke to the depth of his character and commitment to his friends.”

Premier Doug Ford also offered condolences.

“Brian Mulroney was a giant. He leaves behind an unmatched legacy as Canada’s 18th Prime Minister that included negotiating NAFTA and helping to end apartheid in South Africa, Canada has lost its ultimate statesman.”

Our condolences to his family, friends and colleagues.
