KAWARTHA LAKES-The Regional Supervising Coroner, East Region, Kingston Office, has announced the date for the inquest into the deaths of Gladys Helen Ryan and William Thomas Ryan.
While the couple was in hospital, Helen, 76, was shot by her 70-year-old husband, Tom, who was subsequently shot by officers of the Cobourg Police Service. Both died in hospital on October 27, 2017. An inquest into Mr. Ryan’s death is mandatory under the Coroners Act. The Chief Coroner has directed a combined inquest be held regarding both Helen and Tom.
The inquest will examine the circumstances surrounding their deaths. The jury may make recommendations aimed at preventing further deaths.
The inquest is expected to last 11 days and hear from approximately 18 witnesses.
The inquest will begin at 9:30 a.m. on Monday, September 18, 2023. Murray Segal will be the presiding officer. Maria Stevens and Michally Iny will be inquest counsel.
