Four Impaired Driving Charges Laid Within Three Days In Peterborough Area

PETERBOROUGH-Members of the Peterborough County Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to four separate occurrences resulting in four individuals being charged with impaired/80 plus within a three-day period over the August long weekend.

According to police, on August 4, 2023, just prior to 8:30 pm, while on general patrol, a Peterborough County OPP officer observed questionable driving behaviour and conducted a traffic stop of a vehicle to check the sobriety of the driver. During a conversation with the driver, the officer determined that the driver was under the influence of alcohol.

Dustin Steed (age 27) of Douro-Dummer Township, was arrested and charged with:

·      Operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration (80 plus)

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Peterborough on August 31, 2023.

On August 5, 2023, just shortly after 1:00pm, the Peterborough County OPP received a call reporting a single vehicle collision where a vehicle collided with a Hydro pole causing a power outage in the area. The complainant advised that the vehicle that struck the pole had left the scene of the accident. An OPP officer attended the area and observed a vehicle matching the description given and showing signs of considerable damage.

Trevor Kennelly(age 32) of Peterborough, was arrested and charged with:

·      Operation while impaired – alcohol

·      Operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration (80 plus)

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Peterborough on September 5, 2023.

On August 5, 2023, at approximately 2:30pm, while patrolling Kasshabog Lake, members of the Peterborough County OPP Marine unit conducted a stop of a vessel to check for compliance of vessel and operator under the Canada Shipping Act. Police say during the conversation with the operator, the officer observed empty alcoholic beverage containers.

Brandon Clairmont (age 27) of Hamilton ON was arrested and charged with:

·      Operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration (80 plus)

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Peterborough on September 5, 2023.

Just prior to 11:30 am on August 6 members of the Peterborough County OPP observed an E-Bike with two people on it, neither wearing a helmet. Officers conducted a stop and noted that the E-bike only had one pedal and could not be operated manually. During conversation with both parties, it was determined that the operator of the E-Bike was under the influence of alcohol.

Chad McCall (age 47) of Brampton ON was arrested and charged with:

·      Operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration (80 plus)

·      Fail to wear proper helmet on motorcycle

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Peterborough on September 12, 2023.

The accused had their driver’s licence suspended for 90 days and vehicle impounded for seven days.

“The Peterborough County OPP reminds operators of all types of vehicles/vessels to plan ahead when consuming alcohol. Use a designated driver, cab, public transit, or stay overnight. Any amount of alcohol or drugs can impact your ability to make sound judgements.” said police
