19-Year-Old International Student Drowns In The Otonabee River

PETERBOROUGH-A 19-year-old Fleming College student drowned in the Otonabee River over the weekend.

Peterborough Police Service, Peterborough Fire Services and Peterborough Paramedics responded to a 9-1-1 call for help off Turtle Island Sunday evening.

At approximately 8:30 pm police received a call about a 19-year-old male who had gone into the Otonabee River but did not resurface.  Officers searched the shoreline and deployed the Remotely Piloted Aircraft System (RPAS) while fire firefighters deployed resources including two boats to help in the search.

The male was located in the water by firefighters about an hour later, life-saving measures were started and continued by paramedics, however, he was pronounced dead at Peterborough Regional Health Centre.

Next of kin has been notified.  Police say the deceased had just recently arrived in Peterborough as an international student and was attending Fleming College.

Our condolences to his family and friends.
